Step #1 - Submit An Application

Please fill out and submit an application online by clicking the link below.
Questions are asked concerning experience and aid in the matchmaking process.
You do not need to be a previous horse owner to apply.
Adopters must reside in the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

Please Note: The application form is easiest to complete on a desktop computer or laptop.

​Step #2 - Gain Approval

Processing time usually takes 3-4 days
 Applicants are notified of status via e-mail or other designated means.

Step #3 - Choose a Horse

​Available horses are listed on the website complete with multiple photographs, riding video(s) and a detailed description.
Approved adopters can make an adoption appointment to meet and try a horse or make a commitment sight unseen based on website information and a phone/e-mail interview with the Second Sunrise trainer on staff.
​Adopters who work with trainers are encouraged to include them in the selection process.
Step #4 - Pay Adoption Fees
Adoptions are on a first come first serve basis once an adopter is approved.
When we receive payment of the adoption fee, the horse is no longer available for anyone else to adopt. 

Please confirm with Second Sunrise Rescue prior to paying adoption fee. 
We try to update our website as soon as a horse is adopted, but
without confirmation, the horse may not be available and the adoption is not pending or final.
Step #5 - Sign the Adoption Contract

The adoption contract is for one year.
After one year the adopted horse may change hands, contingent upon these conditions:
  • All three updates have been confirmed received
  • Second Sunrise Rescue has been given the Right of First Refusal
  • The Third Party Bill of Sale has been completed and signed by Second Sunrise Rescue.
Step #6 - Arrange Transportation

Once the adoption contract has been signed the adopter has seven days to pick up or transport the horse.
A daily rate of $25/day is charged for board beyond this grace period.

A health certificate and Coggins is required by law for horses that are shipping with a commercial hauler and would be crossing state lines.

Second Sunrise Rescue will provide the Coggins.
​Health certificates are to be paid for by the adopter.
Step #7 - Send Updates

Adopters are required by contract to send three written updates with clear photos during the first year at the 3rd, 6th, and 12th month from the date of the adoption.
This helps Second Sunrise Rescue monitor the horse’s condition and progress.
​Copies are sent to donors to assure them of a successful adoption and may be posted on Second Sunrise Rescue's social media as Success Stories or included in the bi-annual print/PDF newsletter.
